Carbon Fibre Jaguar F-type

Carbon Fibre Jaguar F-type

The Approach

The F-type design and development strategy consisted of utilising the existing front and rear end aluminium structure integrated with central carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) to optimise platform flexibility. In addition, new composite components and skin panels were used per derivative to enhance stiffness and efficiency.

Press formed body panels lower the cost of prototyping and increase the production rate of scalable composites in manufacturing processes.

Project Objective

The primary objective for the F-type project was to create a press formed and bonded structure, saving at least 100kg whilst maintaining structural performance. Through press forming, the panel count was reduced from 250 to 50 providing significant cost efficiencies versus the original vehicle.

Benefits

The new design enabled the panel count to reduce from 250 panels to just 50 panels.  This allowed for substantial investment cost savings in stampings and final assembly, as well as a significant reduction in assembly factory footprint.
